The hold landed on the eve of the FIFA World Cup Final at MetLife Stadium, where President Trump is scheduled to appear Sunday alongside heads of state for the Spain–Argentina match. Natalie Hamilton, spokesperson for the New York–New Jersey FIFA World Cup host committee, told Gothamist that Trump's presence means "security measures will be significantly enhanced, and road closures should be expected."

Those measures can extend to the water. When VIP movements run through the Downtown Manhattan Heliport — Pier 6 on the East River, FAA identifier KJRB, a key rotor-wing landing point for dignitaries arriving in lower Manhattan — the Coast Guard can establish maritime security zones on the adjacent East River under federal regulation, ordering vessels including NYC Ferry boats at the neighboring Pier 11 dock to hold until the exclusion area clears.

NYC Ferry is operated under city contract by City Experiences. Neither the operator nor the Coast Guard's Sector New York responded Saturday to a request for comment. The South Brooklyn route, which stops at Atlantic Ave/Pier 6 — steps from the heliport — was also listed as normal.

If the July 18 holds are confirmed, they would add NYC Ferry's East River corridor to the list of transit services touched by World Cup Final security, alongside MTA and NJ Transit operations that have run under modified schedules throughout the tournament.
