The Giants worked out former Purdue DB Tony Grimes on Sunday, per Aaron Wilson — the fourth NFL team to look at the undrafted free agent who posted a 38-inch vertical at his Pro Day.
The Giants worked out former Purdue defensive back Tony Grimes on Sunday at The Greenbrier, NFL reporter Aaron Wilson reported, citing a league source. The workout adds New York to a list that already includes three other teams: Grimes attended rookie minicamps with the Titans and Panthers and did a local prospect day for the Colts before catching the Giants' eye during John Harbaugh's first training camp.
Grimes came out of Purdue as a former blue-chip recruit who didn't hear his name called on draft weekend. What he did have at his Pro Day: a 38-inch vertical leap, a 4.5 40-yard dash, a 4.3-second short shuttle, and 33.5-inch arms — the kind of raw athletic floor that keeps workout invites coming when the roster doesn't.
The Giants haven't announced a signing. A workout is a look, not a deal. Still, the fact that New York — under new defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson, who is building out a secondary from scratch in the Harbaugh era — is running DBs through the facility 10 days into camp tells you something about where the depth chart stands. The Giants have already waived linebacker Cam Jones and lost defensive lineman C.J. Ravenell to NFI this week; the back half of the roster is in flux.
Grimes turns a fourth NFL team's head. Whether he turns it enough to earn a contract is the next question.
