A 9/11 family member has launched a petition to exclude Mayor Zohran Mamdani from Ground Zero's 25th anniversary ceremony this September, citing his reluctance to condemn "globalize the intifada" and his associations with a Brooklyn imam and a political commentator. City Hall says he's attending.

A petition calling on organizers to exclude Mayor Zohran Mamdani from the September 11 anniversary ceremony at Ground Zero has drawn more than 5,000 signatures, according to a report published Sunday.

Giovanni Galante, whose wife Grace Catherine Galante was killed in the attacks, initiated the effort. "This day is sacred to us," Galante told the New York Post, arguing the ceremony should not serve as a platform for views the victims' families find offensive.

The petition cites four specific grievances: Mamdani's reluctance to condemn the phrase "globalize the intifada"; his praise for Brooklyn imam Siraj Wahhaj; his association with commentator Hasan Piker, who has made controversial statements about the attacks; and writings by his father, Columbia professor Mahmood Mamdani, characterizing suicide bombings as a form of modern political violence.

A City Hall spokesperson said Mamdani plans to attend the ceremony regardless, to stand with the victims. The mayor was nine years old on September 11, 2001.

The petition is a public pressure campaign with no formal enforcement mechanism cited; the annual ceremony at the World Trade Center site is administered by the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, a nonprofit that has not commented. The 25th anniversary, falling on September 11, 2026, is expected to draw particularly heavy official attendance.

The petition joins a recurring line of pressure on Mamdani over his statements and associations on the Israel-Gaza conflict — a challenge that followed him through the Democratic primary and has not let up since he took office.
